Chypre is a word used to describe a category of perfumes
that usually have a citrus top note, a floral heart note and a woody base
note. The woody base note has historically
contained oak moss, ambergris and sandalwood.
The word chypre is French for Cyprus. The word was first used by Francois Coty who
created an influential perfume by the name Chypre in 1917.
Chypres are generally abstract scents, meaning they do not
smell like anything specific in nature, therefore one might call this category as
smelling perfume-y.
