Within these four categories are several subcategories. Please review the descriptions below to become acquainted with the scent categories and the way we describe perfumes here at The Posh Peasant.


Fresh scents are zesty, clean, and effervescent. They're bursting with ripe fruits, such as lemon, lime, and grapefruit and exploding with crisp greens, such as fresh cut grass and violet leaves. Some also stir cool and refreshing aquatic aromas, such as sea breeze and fresh dew.

Fresh Citrus
Combines juicy notes of lemon, mandarin, grapefruit, yuzu and other citrus oils. Some are softly spiked with hints of wood and musk, making them uber-sexy.

Fresh Green
Green tea leaves, green grass, fresh herbs, vines and leafy scents give these fragrances a clean, sporty attitude.

Fresh Water/Aquatic
These refreshing cooling scents wash over the skin and give a sense of relief on hot summer days. The notes are watery, airy, icy and dewy.
An example: Issey Miyake L'Eau de Issey, Sage Machado Turquoise, Creative Universe Mare


The most popular fragrance family, Floral is a blend of mixed bouquets of jasmine, rose, white peony, gardenia, and tuberose. These fragrances are either pure and flowery, or subtly warmed with a touch of spice or fruit for a soft, powdery finish.

White Floral
Only pure white blossms such as jasmine, gardenia, freesia, lily, and tuberose

Soft Floral
Classic floral notes such as white flowers and rose are mixed with more powdery notes such as iris, vanilla and perhaps a touch of citrus.

Rich and regal, Oriental fragrances are wrapped with warm, spicy notes, such as vanilla, cinnamon, and clove. Also present are opulent flowers - think rose and orchid - blended with sweet spices, as well as mouth-watering sugars stirred with amber and nutmeg.

Woody Oriental
Soft sandalwood, warm rosewood, layered with deep, rich, potent patchouli, some soft blossoms and a hint of spice make this sensual scent category.

Floral Oriental
Orange flowers, vanilla, white pepper, sweet spices mixed with florals create a beautifully sensual scent with depth and complexity.

Soft Oriental
Mysterious notes of incense, amber and musk are infused with soft florals and spices to create an ethereal yet elegant aroma.

Gourmand
The Gourmand fragrances are a relatively new category, with the concept of basing fragrances on edible notes. A gourmand scent may contain notes such as spices, honey, vanilla, chocolate, amber and cinnamon. Gourmand scents are usually "comfy" and delicious and wear nicely in the cooler seasons.

Woodsy scents are nutty and spicy in nature with sensual notes of amber, sandalwood, cedar wood, and a touch of patchouli.
Some wood blends have a hint of cinnamon, a sprinkle of earth, or a puff of tobacco.

Woody Oriental
Exotic woods of amber, sandalwood, cedar and sometimes leathery and smoky notes, are blended with warm spices, usually with a hint of patchouli, making a captivating fragrance.

Dry Wood
Imagine leather, tobacco, cedar wood, peppery spices, incense, smoky, warm and inviting, sometimes invigorated by a slight splash of citrus

Mossy Wood
Mossy Wood scents smell like a forest. Notes might include oakmoss, deep green scents, warm earthy scents, sandalwood with perhaps a bit of crisp citrus to liven up the overall fragrance.
